Dear [Councillor’s Name],
I am writing to express my deep concern about the proposed closure of the Rural Activities Garden Centre (RAGC) in Hillingdon.
As someone who [insert your connection to the centre — e.g., “has a family member who attends”, “is part of the local community”, etc.], I know first-hand how vital this centre is to so many people — particularly those with additional needs who rely on its services, community, and support.
The council’s recent statement suggests that alternative provisions will be made, but this is misleading. Only individuals with official care plans will be eligible for support, and even then, what is being offered is not equivalent to what RAGC provides. The majority of those affected do not have care plans, meaning they will be left entirely without support. This centre is not just a facility — it is a lifeline. It helps people develop confidence, gain skills, find purpose, and access meaningful opportunities that would otherwise be unavailable.
For some, it is the only place they feel safe, seen, and valued. Closing it risks pushing vulnerable individuals into isolation, which can have serious emotional, mental, and financial consequences. Moreover, this decision will lead to job losses for the dedicated staff who work tirelessly to support attendees, further damaging the community.
I am also extremely concerned by the council’s apparent intention to proceed without full public consultation. Given the far-reaching impact of this closure on residents, families, and staff, I believe it is only right and fair that the community has a voice in this decision.
I am urging you, as my elected representative, to:
- Call for a pause on this decision to allow time for proper consultation.
- Support keeping RAGC open, or at the very least, ensure that any transition includes real, meaningful alternatives for everyone affected.
Please do not let this vital resource disappear without a fight. The people who rely on RAGC need you to stand up for them.
I would welcome a response on your position regarding this issue.
